Back from Cali

At the 3rd base dugout at Angel Stadium

Gavin and cousin River

We're back from California after a week-long visit to Orange County and Elizabeth Lake. We had a wonderful time at the Harvest Crusade and there was an amazing response, with more than 108,000 in attendance over three nights and 11,000 people making decisions for Christ. I must admit that it was tough to work all day/night and care for Gavin at the same time (mostly feeding him while Joe did just about everything else)...there is no supermom out there...it's tough doing multiple things while mothering. But we had a great time as a family and learned a lot about traveling with a baby.

And while there is no supermom, Joe certainly was an exemplary father throughout the week, taking care of Gavin about 90% of the time while I worked. It was so cool to see the bond between them grow stronger as they played and hung out. Gav giggles everytime his daddy makes a funny face at him or sings him a little song, no doubt a result of all the time they shared together. On the downside, Gavin now likes television and Starbucks. Ha!

Apart from seeing some dear friends who work for Harvest, we also had the chance to stay with close friends, the Perry's, and to see our friends, the Hornings, who were visiting California from Nashville. Joe and Gavin also had the opportunity to have dinner with cousins Theresa, Doran, and River. As an extra-special bonus, my friend Karen flew out from Seattle with her husband (he was in Burbank on business) and joined us for lunch on Monday! It was so great to see my old Chicago friend for chips and salsa...of course!

We were very busy, to say the least.

Things went very smoothly, but you knew I would have a story about the airplane eventually, eh? On the flight back, Joe accidentally left my changing mat in the airport bathroom so we had to change Gavin on the airplane galley floor on a little towel...such a bummer that there were no changing tables in the bathroom this time, especially since Gavin blew it out on the plane. But the worst was his gas. The poor little guy cried for the first two hours of the flight. Oh, well. At least there were three little girls screaming behind us on the flight so what was one more baby? I guess this is payback for all of the people with babies on planes I was annoyed with before I had a child.

I'm just sorry that I missed you this time. But the good news is that Ken's surgery went well and he is recovering nicely. Bummer on the timing though. Glad to hear it was a good trip!

1. Karen - what fun!

2. Ridiculously cute and cheeky smile Gavin's giving with his cousin Rivers.

3. Beautiful beach shots above - CA I presume? OR is perhaps loverly Evanston?
