Start Spreadin' the News...

Yes, it's true that I'm going to NYC tomorrow for a little vaca. But the news I'm spreading today is of far more importance. I'm pregnant!! Now that I'm 12 weeks along, Joe and I have spent the past week sharing details with our friends. So, if I have missed telling any of you, you really are finding out just about when everyone else is.

We are extremely excited and can't wait until the April 4 arrival of Baby McG (our baby's rap name).

A Day at the Shedd

We just returned from a fun day at the Shedd Aquarium downtown. Joe's parents won a behind-the-scenes tour of aquatic life at the musuem at an auction and took us, as well as our friends Pat & Jill and kids Lily, Evan, and Clara. We all enjoyed the up-close-and-personal views of the world's largest and ugliest catfish, stingrays, penguins, and sharks. The kids were bouncing off the walls with excitement! The highlight for most was seeing a dolphin at close proximity.

The festivities continue this weekend as we take a daytrip to Michigan to the birthplace of the Lola Living blog--Three Oaks, Michigan. We're going to pick up the last jam of the season and, of course, to eat dinner at Casa Tosi's! I'm such an old woman. We'll celebrate anniversary number five and drink a toast to many more to come.

40 Years is a Really Long Time

Surprise!

Backing up a few weeks, Joe and I had the chance to help throw a surprise 40th anniversary party for my parents over Labor Day weekend. We traveled to Utah, along with several other relatives, to pull off the big surprise. With my sister, Melissa, working logistics from inside the state and my Grandmother giving us good advice over the phone, I handled some of the party planning from Chicago and, amazingly, it all came together! My grandparents traveled from Florida and my dad's twin brother, Jack, and his wife, our Aunt Renee, came from New Mexico. In addition, we invited people from dad's running club and their friends from church. My brother, Scott, was also there helping as a decoy, along with my sis-in-law Kristina, brother-in-law, Matt, and nieces Kate, Breann, and Sarah.

We loved seeing my parent's faces when they walked into Magleby's and saw us all standing there, ready to toast them for a relationship sustained over four decades. That's no easy feat in this day and age, and they seem to be having more fun as the years pass. Especially now that they will be spending months on end cruising around the world, working on Princess Cruise Line (that's a whole other story, folks).
At any rate, it was a wonderful weekend full of celebration. In additon to my parent's anniversary, Scott & Kristina celebrated 16 years of marriage, and Aunt Renee celebrated her 39th birthday (did I get that right?). Maybe for my parent's 50th anniversary we should all go on a cruise with them? Hmmm...wishful thinking...

Congratulations, Mom & Dad. We love you!!

Early Fall Fun

This weekend marked the end of summer weather as we know it in Chicago. On Sept. 14, I made the transition...to pants. After a summer of long and flowing skirt-wearing that was oh-so-forgiving, I was forced to reveal my thighs in all their glory as I slipped into my snug pantalones. Oh well. Can anyone say tights? It should be cold enough for those in the next month, so let the squeezing and lifting begin!

The cool weather on Friday and Saturday was perfect for the yard sale I collaborated on with my friends Judy, Justin, and Brian. Joe was able to join us on Saturday for his inauguration into our yearly yard sale club, and a delightful time was had by all. In addition to the joy we all felt as we watched our junk being hauled away, we were impressed by five-year-old Mackenzie's business acumen as she sold $25.40 worth of cider, hot chocolate, and pumpkin break from her roadside stand. All told, the yard sale was a success and we walked away with $254!! Not bad. Now we have some spending money for our anniversary trip to NYC in a couple of weeks.

Taking advantage of the beautiful weekend, Joe and I headed to Division Street in Wicker Park yesterday afternoon, catching a street fair and perusing the numerous shops, including Coco Rouge, a gorgeous chocolate shop that serves exotic flavors. I love this neighborhood and can see why people live here. It has wide sidewalks, cute cafes (Milk and Honey, Crust), and is generally perfect for strolling and bumping into neighbors. We finished out the day with a visit to Adobo Grill where they were running their weekend Mole Fest. Yum.

You Have to Make Your Own Fun When You Travel

I think I hit my summer limit on travel during a recent business trip that had me flying out of the San Jose, California airport. I was just AMAZED when I walked into the airport bathroom and saw the largest stalls I've ever encountered in my personal airport history. Wow! Plenty of room for a bag AND a toilet...I mean, really! I forgot about these photos that I took in August until just now, and I realized that sometimes I really am pathetic. What was I thinking???? What were the people in the other stalls thinking when a flash went off at their feet?
At any rate, enjoy the photo. Sorry about the swirling TP in mid-flush. Oh well. It all goes back to my life theme: You've Got to Make Your Own Fun.

Another Oprah Adventure

For those of you who don't know, I have so far had a series of "Oprah Adventures." The adventures have consisted of figuring out how to use the story topic section of http://www.oprah.com/ to appear as a guest on the show. No call-in number needed. No waiting years to snag tickets. No standing in line in front of Harpo Studios hoping for a last-minute cancellation. If you live in Chicago, you too can take advantage of the icon entitled "last minute Chicago-area guests."

The first time I made it onto the show as a guest was for a program entitled something like, "Why I Like the Backstreet Boys and Why I Support Howie In His Choice to Go Through Drug Rehab." In case you're wondering what sort of affiliation I could possibly have with the Backsteet Boys, let me tell you that Joe and I were married in the very same church as Brian Litrell--one of the actual "boys." Plus, my friend, who shall remain nameless (Larisa) and I "chaperoned" a teenaged girl from our church to the concert. Who cares if we made our way to the front of the stage and sang along? That was back in 2001! Anyhow, that's how I came to be a guest on Oprah, sitting in the front row with Judy from Moody, hoping they didn't ask about any lingering crushes we might have had on any of the grown-men-in-rehab posturing as boys.

My second Oprah adventure resulted from me once again filling out the online form for potential guests on Oprah.com, this one a search for Chicago-area guests currently participating in the "Debt Diet." That one was easy, with a producer contacting me the same day to find out if Joe and I could come on the show together. No interviewing needed, we simply came as seat-fillers and went home with a copy of a money management book.

I'm hoping the third time is a charm as we prepare to embark on yet another Oprah Adventure. You see, we really need just one more bedroom in our condo/loft. Whenever we have guests, they must either sleep on the floor, on our couch, or in our bed while we sleep on the floor or on the couch. That's no fun for anyone. We've looked into buying a house, but alas, the market going into winter is bad for selling and we are cashless at the moment. So, why not add a bit of extra space to our current situation? This is where Oprah comes in.

In the interest of adding more space to our space, I took a peek at the Oprah website once again, hoping for some help in building such a room. Well, what do you know? Nate had been searching for someone willing to let him do a room makeover! I sent an e-mail, describing why my spouse and I are deserving candidates, and low and behold, the next day I received a response from a producer. She requested photos of our place, which I sent along later that week. Another week came and went, and I received a phone call from the producer asking for a five-minute video of our home, hosted by the two of us and explaining why we need the room makeover. Well, I am happy to report that our friend, Scott, came over this morning to shoot and format our footage and it is now on it's way to the Oprah Winfrey Show! Please give a little prayer shout-out that Nate and and the producers will choose our place for the makeover. Tres fun!

What to Watch In NYC

Does anyone have any suggestions about a play that is worth seeing in New York City? Jersey Boys is sold out for the weekend we will be there (for our anniversary!), and Joe put the ix-nay on seeing Xanadu, the roller musical (and I quote, "This looks like three hours of pain to me"). But how can Xanadu be so wrong when songs like, "Suddenly" by Olivia Newton John are so right? Sigh.

We already have the food planned out. Thursday night dinner at Crispo for Northern Italian yumminess. A food tour of Chelsea Market for lunch on Friday. A visit to Craft for our official anniversary dinner on Saturday (go, Tom Collichio!). I'm sure we'll fit some other things in as well (Gramercy Tavern, Spice Market?).

Having fun requires so much advance planning if you're me.

Celebrity Sighting at...Church???

Hey, cool kids. Well, it looks like my parents win the super cool award for the week. My mom called me on Sunday at about 12:30 p.m.--right after church--which is not typical. Afterall, we all have to go out to eat, right? I called her back and she was all a-flutter with the news. Lindsey Lohan showed up at my parent's church for the morning service!

In case you're wondering what Lindsey Lohan was doing at Rock Canyon Church which meets at the Provo Towne Center movie theater in Provo, Utah, let me remind you. Drug rehab at Sundance. Apparently, one of the members of her AA group attends the church and told her about it. Rock on, Rock Canyon!

Lindsey slipped into the second row of the theater through an underground garage tunnel and left right when the service concluded. Sadly, there was paparazzi in the theater taking photos of her the entire time. Let's hope they took the message to heart.

Is the Honeymoon Over?

I've been shamelessly lazy about blogging over the past month. One of my friend's said, "I guess you're over the honeymoon phase with your blog," but I promise, the second honeymoon is just warming up! How can I be gone when I still haven't written about the rest of the summer? And believe me, things got really good...more on this later.

In the meantime, Joe and I are getting ready to go down to jeweler's row today to look at a little sparkly ring to celebrate our 5th year of wedded bliss. Well, make that one year of wedded bliss and four years of "getting used to being married." Ha! I'll post a photo once I have the bling on-hand.
